Gor Mahia is considering pulling out of continental competitions, Chairman Ambrose Rachier has said.
This comes after Sportpesa, the club's main sponsor, canceled all sponsorship deals with local sports teams.
The betting firm's move was influenced by the government's decision to impose a 35 percent tax on gaming companies in the countries.
“We regret to announce that we are terminating all sponsorships effective immediately. This affects the Football Kenya Federation, Kenya Rugby Union, Gor Mahia, Nakuru All-Stars, National Boxing league and the Super 8 league. If the tax was on profit, even if 50%, that would be much better, If the government rethinks, we would love to come back to sponsorship,” Sportpesa Captain CEO Ronald Karauri said in a statement.
Reacting to Sportpesa's move, Rachier noted on Tuesday that the Kenya Premier League champions will withdraw from their continental assignments due to lack of sponsorship.
AFC Leopards and Gor are to participate in Caf Confederations Cup and Caf Champions League respectively.
