Ugunja Member of Parliament James Opiyo Wandayi has accused the government of altering the rules and regulations governing Uwezo fund kitty that was set by the National Assembly. Wandayi stated that as a parliament, they agreed and set clear rules and regulations that would see to it that uwezo fund beneficiary groups gets a minimum of Sh 50,000 up to a maximum of Sh 500,000. Speaking during the presentation of Ugunja Uwezo Fund cheques in his Ugunja constituency, Wandayi regretted that this has since been altered after government circulars were sent to constituency committees directing that groups should not get an exceeding amount of Sh 100,000.
He however stated that they are going to challenge the amendment in parliament once it resumes next year. Wandayi on the other hand encouraged beneficiary groups to direct their money to their initial business plans and warned them against misusing the funds especially now that it is heading Christmas. Dr. Christine Ombaka, who also doubles up as the county Uwezo Fund patron also encouraged women to work harder and those who never applied to consider applying sins the funds will be available yearly. Ugunja constituency was allocated Sh 16.7 million from the Uwezo Fund kitty and so far, the management committee has disbursed cheques worth Sh 12.5 million to 156 youth, women and persons with disability groups.
