The Government has announced plans to mechanize agriculture and also focus on agriculture as a business in order to improve food production.
Addressing media in Nakuru on Thursday during a stakeholders workshop on Farmers Field School program, Agriculture PS Dr. Richard Lesiyiampe said it is sad for a country like Kenya to have low food production.
The PS said the government will work closely with counties and other development partners in ensuring that farming is mechanized.
“As a country we have had a challenge in production of enough food including our own staple food such as rice and therefore as a national government we will work closely with counties and other development partners to ensure we mechanize farming,” said Lesiyiampe.
The PS revealed that the government has already purchased boats at the coast to ensure mechanization in the fishing industry.
“We have introduced boats at the coast to ensure mechanized farming. As a government we are also calling on farmers to stop relying on rain for farming but rather engage in irrigation,” said the PS.
