The State and county governments have been asked to safeguard the lives of university students.
Kenya University Students Organisation (KUSO) Chairman Babu Owino has asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry and his Education counterpart Prof Jacob Kaimenyi to provide security to university students.
The Kenya university student leader, who is also the President of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University called on the government to help curb the rate at which many university students are losing lives due to the insecurity around their universities.
“The cabinet secretaries Kaimenyi and Nkaiserri should ensure that all comrades are safe as they undertake their studies. We have scores of students from both public and private universities either being killed or attacked and injured by thugs,” said Owino.
Speaking to this reporter today, Owino said that most students from main campuses fear for their security as the rate at which they were being attacked is on the rise.
His sentiments were echoed by his KUSO Secretary General and SOMU (Students Organisation of Maseno University), President Charles Juma, who said that a number of Maseno University students have lost their lives where they seek outside accommodation at Mabungo, Nyawita and Green Park areas.
“Many of our students have been killed or injured by thugs when going to their rooms which are outside the university. I am calling upon county governments to also put measures in place that will ensure that the security of our students is guaranteed,” said Juma.
