The weekly anti-IEBC protests by the Coalition for reforms and democracy (Cord) are from next Monday illegal, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said.
In a Tuesday press briefing at Harambee House Nairobi, Nkaissery noted that the move was arrived at after what he termed as the realisation that the protesters were not sticking to their real agenda but turning the peaceful protests into a looting spree.
He called on the Cord principals to rethink their strategy, arguing that as a government they would not "sit back and watch innocent lives get lost in the name of pushing for reforms".
"This is a government directive and must be respected because we are concerned with the ugly scenes witnessed across the country for the past weeks the protests have been held. Its totally unaccepted for people to loot, harass and disturb peace thus inconveniencing other law abiding citizens. These protests must stop," he posed.
This comes after High Court through Justice Joseph Onguto on Monday ruled that Cord were free to demonstrate further instructing the police to offer them security during their protests.
