The government, through the Kenya Films and Classifications Board (KFCB)  has banned local lesbian movie 'RAFIKI' (friend) from being staged in the country.

The movie had been selected to showcase during the Cannes Festival this year.

The movie was written by Wanuri who announced that the film had been banned in the country accusing the government of denying adults the opportunity to watch what they want.

Wanuri on Friday through her official Twitter account said: "I am incredibly sorry to announce that our film RAFIKI has been banned in Kenya. We believe adult Kenyans are mature and discerning enough to watch local content but their right has been denied."

The movie is about a story of two female friends Kena and Ziki who are scene in a trailer cuddle and kiss each other despite the political rivalry between their respective families.

They remain close friends in a conservative society and spring up their urge to pursue their own dreams and love begins to blossom between them.

Blogger Rober Alai defended the writer of the film saying: "No country can succeed in banning films nowadays with the many available digital channels. Use the digital channels to remove the borders."

Lesbianism remain criminal in Kenya and President Uhuru Kenyatta has been hard on its legalization.
