The national government has renewed its commitment to improve standards of various prison facilities in the country. The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Coordination in the ministry of Interior and Coordination Josephta Oyiela, said the government has strived to improve the status of the prisons. Oyiela said prisoners are now taking three meals a day as opposed to the past where food was scarce. She pointed out that more had been done to ensure prisoners sleep in proper bedding and have access to water and other amenities. Speaking when she visited Kodiaga Women’s Prison in Kisumu, the PS says the government will not stop at that and will ensure other services are improved within the prisons. “The government is exploring ways on how to better improve further living conditions in our correctional facilities across the country,” she said. Oyiela called upon Kenyans to visit their relatives and families in prison so that they don’t feel isolated. She said prisoners should not be condemned but shown love to enable them feel part and parcel of the family outside the prison. “Prisoners should not be isolated or rather condemned, they are still Kenyans and they need our love. Kenyans should embrace prisoners and not neglect them,” she said.
