According to the Cabinet Secretary for Health Cleopa Mailu, cancer is a deadly and expensive disease to manage.

"As a ministry we will construct four additional cancer centers to perform cancer screening and treating, I challenge Kenyans to register with NHIF which will grantee them quality and affordable healthcare," Dr Mailu said.

Speaking during the Midwives Kenya Association Annual scientific conference in Eldoret in Thursday Mailu said, this will help to reduce the cost of cancer treatment since the price will be subsidised from every Kenyan to get the services.

"I urge Kenyans to always go for cancer screening at least once per year since if it's identified early can be treated," he said.

He however called upon expectant mothers to ensure they give birth in hospitals because the government is offering free maternity.

"World wide 289,000 women die annually and 5.6 million children died before their 5th birthday due to poor maternal care," he said.

He added the national government will be offering free antenatal, delivery and postnatal.

He called upon nurses' council to regulate institutions offering medical courses since majority of them are "quack".

"It's sad that some institutions are registered and yet offering medical courses where at the end of their training they cannot be employed since their papers are nor recognised," he said.
