The government's decision to start distributing books direct to school will curb piracy in the industry, a publisher has said.

According to Kenya Literature Bureau MD Victor Lomaria, of the 33 million copies sought by the government, KLB is producing and distributing 18 million copies during the first phase of the program.

Lomaria was speaking in Larmudiac secondary school in Njoro sub-county.

“Of the 33 million copies sought by the government, KLB is producing and distributing 18 million copies during the first phase of the program that will see each student receive six books,” Lomaria said.

Lomaria added that the biggest publisher has so far distributed the books to 34 counties and expect to wrap up the exercise by the close of weekend as they prepare for the second phase.

"We secured 70% of the tender to supply the books which will see us supply form 2,3 and 4 as well as class 7&8 thereafter," he said.

The publisher said the government's decision has dealt a blow to piracy which has been diluting the quality of books sent to schools.

Njoro MP Charity Kadhambi Chepkwony , speaking during the meeting, promised to set up a library at Larmudiac to have a safe place for the books.

Nakuru Deputy Governor Dr. Erick Korir said they will offer bursaries to students to ensure more children get education.
