A total of 400 elderly persons from Lugari Sub County benefited from relief food donated by the national government.
Speaking when she handed over the food to the elders, the area deputy county commissioner Agnes Karoki Shadrack said that food was donated through the government’s initiative to ensure that no citizen died of hunger.
The DCC revealed that her office had received a total of 69 bags of dry maize, 23 bags of beans and 20 bags of rice.
She said the programme targeted vulnerable elders from poverty-stricken families whereby a thorough vetting was done with village elders helping to identify the needy families to ensure only deserving cases benefited.
Karoki revealed that the beneficiaries were drawn from Lugari, Lumakanda, Mautuma and Chekalini locations with a total of 100 beneficiaries from each of the four locations sharing the donation.
“Working with the available food, we dealt with most needy cases as we are aware not all families are vulnerable and we want to ensure no one will lose his or her life because of hunger,” asserted Karoki.
However, the deputy county commissioner urged the elders to ensure that the food benefited them as intended, warning against selling it.
The beneficiaries thanked the government for the donation with some of them saying it was a reprieve to their families that only take a single meal a day or sometimes go on empty stomachs.
“Life has been unbearable because we hardly get enough food but we thank the government for the little we have received,” they said.
