The government has extended the curfew it had earlier on imposed in Mandera county by three more months,  a move aimed at boosting security in the region.

The curfew had been imposed following the killing of 12 people in a hotel late last year, a second attack in less than three weeks after the first, with terror group Al shabaab claiming responsibility.

Interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaisery indicated that the curfew will be in full force between 7pm to 5am daily.

In a Gazette notice, he clarified that the orders applied to Mandera town, Omar Jillo,Arabia Fino,Lafey Kottulo,Elwak and environs of the  locations extending to 20 kilometeres from the SOmalia border.

"Every person who resides in the said areas shall expect in accordance with the terms and conditions of a written permit granted by the respective Deputy County commissioner for the affected areas remain indoors in the premises at which they reside or at such other premises as may be authorised,"said Nkaisery.

Mandera county has been grappling with insecurity threats over the past few years with Al shabaab terror group claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.
