Members of the Kisumu County Assembly have condemned the ongoing clashes along the Kisumu-Nandi county border in the wake of clashes in Songhor and Kopere areas.
Led by Masogo Nyang’oma Ward MCA Samuel Onyango Ongow and his Kolwa East Counterpart John Osumba Olum, the two leaders said the government has failed in bringing peace in the area.
Mr Ongow said the Luo community living along the border has suffered for a long time in the hands of their neighbours and their property destroyed and lives lost.
He said it is members from the Nandi community who often cross the border and bring conflict after stealing animals.
“Our people have been peaceful, they have never crossed to steal livestock from Nandi, occasionally it is rustlers from Nandi who come to provoke us,” he said.
He said even the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has failed in its mandate to bring peace in the area.
Speaking at the Assembly ground on Thursday, Mr Olum on his part said as Kisumu County Assembly, they will summon the county security team in Kisumu to bring an end to the conflict.
Olum said the security team must assure the locals at the border that there will be peace especially ahead of the 2017 elections.
“Acts of lawlessness will instill fear among our people as we head towards the coming polls. I appeal to security apparatus to arrest the situation early,” he said.
