The government is frustrating the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners plan to leave office.
Narc Kenya party leader, Martha Karua says little has been done to sort out the exit package for the commissioners who should leave by September 30, 2016. This was in a recommendation by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on the IEBC.
Karua, who was in Nakuru on Wednesday for a meeting with the party’s county officials, said her party is concerned over the seeming delay to have the commissioners exit date in just two days.
“Narc Kenya is concerned as there is no mechanism to guide the exit,” said Karua.
Karua who stood for elections in 2013 against President Uhuru Kenyatta called for speedy negotiations to beat the September 30 deadline and give way for a new team to take office. She also called for resignation of the current commissioners.
On Monday, IEBC chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan said that it was unlikely for him and his team to leave office before October 4, 2016. He said this is the day the law paving way for their exit will come into force.
Karua also wants appointment of new IEBC commissioners fast tracked and completed by November as the law requires new commissioners to be appointed eight months before a General Election.
Already, IEBC and the government have agreed on a later date when the team can leave office.
