The government of Kenya has said it will not relent in its quest to streamline the education sector.

The Principal Secretary Univesity Education Prof Collete Suda has said the government will from now shift focus from creating new universities to enhancing quality in existing institutions.

The PS noted that there are 31 public and 40 private universities in the country.

Suda said the universities audit by the Commission for University Education in February this year was to improve education standards.

"The findings of the audit will form the basis of forward planning to ensure quality remains in focus at all times. The Government will not relent in its quest to streamline education to respond to our needs as a country," Suda said during the fourth graduation ceremony at Southern Eastern Kenya University main campus in Kitui.

The PS appealed to universities and colleges to focus on quality programmes and avoid expanding the institutions at the expense of relevance of courses offered.

"It must be recognised that expansion of university education in an environment of limited resources has negative effect on quality," said Prof Suda.
