Garissa women representative Gure Shukran has accused the national government of doing little to address drought affecting residents in North Eastern.
Shukran said the drought being experienced in parts of the arid and semi-arid counties has adversely affected many families who are mostly herders.
She said most of the residents in the region are desperate and they are now resorting to acts that threaten their own security and that of the nation at large.
Referring to Friday’s incident where five people were killed in Duse area, Garbatulla sub-county, Isiolo, Shukran said that the attack was as a result of competition for water and pasture following the persistent dry spell in the county.
Speaking in Garissa when she flagged off 65 water storage tanks meant for the resident of Dadaab sub-county, the women rep said the government needs to come up with intervention measures to assist the affected families.
“Despite President Uhuru Kenyatta declaring the current drought a national disaster, there are no commensurate intervention programmes in place to combat the worsening drought,” she said.
Shukran who condemned the recent Isiolo attack urged Internal Security CS Joseph Nkaisery to personally intervene in Isiolo conflict that has now lasted several months since pastoralists’ communities in the affected areas are migrating in search of water and pasture for their animals.
“Our people especially those in the rural areas are suffering and out of desperation to save their herds have entered into neighbouring counties in search of pasture and water. The locals on the other hand want to protect the scarce resources resulting in the bloody clashes,” she said.
