The ban also resulted in job creation for Kisii youths who formed companies to make and market non- plastic bags while other Kenyans, especially those previously working in plastic manufacturing industries, lose employment.

The most affected include butchers, shopkeepers, hoteliers and grocers who complained over the inconveniences experienced in service delivery.

“We have nothing to use as the plastic bag sellers have already closed down but we hope we will get another alternative in the next few days,” said Ken Mogere a butcher in Kisii town.

Other vegetable venders led by Jane Kemuma accused NEMA of failure to involve the public in the implementation of the environmental legislation ban on plastic bags.

“NEMA should have involved us in trying to come up with an alternative for the plastic bag," said Kemuma.
