Lari Deputy County Commissioner Benard Kinyua has assured those affected by the land clashes in Maai-Mahiu that the government is investigating the matter.
Kinyua said a committee had been formed that included representatives from the Kikuyu and Maasai communities to investigate the land clashes.
Speaking during the opening of Magina Dispensary in Lari, Kinyua said most of the land owners affected were from Lari, Limuru and Kikuyu constituencies in Kiambu County.
The land owners formed the Utheri wa Lari Cooperative and contributed shares through which they bought the land several years ago.
“We call you to remain calm as government investigates the matter,” said Kinyua.
Also present was Kiambu Chamber of Commerce Chairman Thinguri Waruathe who said he was a member of the cooperative and wanted the government to compensate the affected.
“The government should do a valuation on the land and compensate the shareholders according to the current land value, then give the land to the Maasai. It will be difficult for the Kikuyus to stay in such a hostile environment even though the land is rightfully theirs,” said Thinguri.
Two people died following the clashes while eight others were left nursing injuries.
