The government through the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology has embarked on a five- week Ajira digital training programme that will benefit more than 10,000 youth in the country.
The Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and Technology Joe Mucheru said in the first phase, the ministry will train 10,000 youths in six centres in Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu, Meru and Nakuru.Mr Mucheru said the objective of the programme is to see over one million young people secure decent wages from online employment.Speaking during the official opening of the five day training at the Kenyatta University, Mombasa campus, Mr Mucheru congratulated the 202 youths from the Coast region selected for the training.“The demand for the training was very high and I must congratulate you all for making it to the final list of applicants we plan to train during this pioneering phase.”“Parents and young people should not get concerned about the credibility and authenticity of online work. The training aims to introduce the young people to online work and provide tools, training and mentorship you need to be able to bid for work and earn a decent income from it,” he said.The CS urged the private sector and other international organization to come forward to support the training of more Kenyans on online work.The Ajira Digital Programme is being implemented by the ICT, Youth and Gender Affairs, Education, Foreign Affairs ministries in partnership with the civil society and private sector.
