The national government has set aside Sh700m for the refurbishment of Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi County.Deputy President William Ruto said on Tuesday that the stadium will be ready for use by April 2018.Nyayo was one of the key venues for the 2018 Africa Home Nations Championship (CHAN) before Kenya lost the second-tier CAF competition to Morocco due to late development of stadia and the prevailing political tension brought by the electioneering period.DP Ruto said the government will use sport to unite Kenyans following a tense year characterized by political divisions because of the General and repeat Presidential elections. He also said that Kamariny, Makueni, Marsabit, Meru, Ruring’u, Chuka and Eldoret stadiums that are under renovation alongside Nyayo will be in use by April.Ruto added that work on the Mombasa and Kisumu county stadiums which the Government has set aside KSh300m for each was yet to start due to ‘logistical problems’.“We are persuading these counties to ensure the construction work on such projects begins as soon as possible to pave way for the development of sporting activities in such areas,” he said.
