A chief is among five people arrested and charged before a Kisii court following the recent abduction of a 60-year-old woman from Bokeire village in Kisii County.
Fredrick Nyambati Nyaruri, Reuben Onduso Ongeri, Joseph Moire Onduko, Benson Machuka and Oyugi Mwenga appeared before senior resident magistrate SK Onchoro on Wednesday but denied the charges levelled against them after the woman went missing two weeks ago.
The five were accused of abducting Esther Bochaberi Oyugi on the night of March 11, 2018, at Kokeire sub location in Kisii sub-county.
They were charged alongside others who were not in court but were released after being granted a bond of Sh200,000 each with a surety of a similar amount.
The case will be heard on August 15.
Two days after the woman disappeared, protests rocked Kisii town as relatives and friends to the family of the abducted woman demonstrated calling for police to establish her whereabouts and arrest those behind her disappearance.
The protesters, at first accused the police of working with the abductors because of the slow way they were conducting investigations into the matter.
Police, however, intervened and prevented the protests from becoming violent as they promised that they will find the woman.
