The Government will from next month come up with guidelines to check and ensure responsible use of social media.
The Director of Digital Communication in the Office of the President Dennis Itumbi said they are in talks with the police, Kenya Film Classification Board, Media Owners Association, and Media Council to come up with recommendations on the Kenya Communications Amendment Act where the guidelines will be enshrined.
Speaking during a press briefing in Nakuru on Tuesday, Itumbi said the amendments will guide bloggers and other social media users on the responsible use of the platforms.
He said bloggers and other social media users will be expected to get into associations where they can easily self-regulate their content to avoid inciteful and hate messages at the platform.
Itumbi said social media users should exercise patriotism. He said the direction which social media was taking, if not checked in time, might spark violence in the 2017 poll.
Itumbi said the government is not targeting any particular blogger but ensure responsible use.
“We cannot go to elections with the social media where one posts information that some place is burning or someone has died yet it is false. Those people should be held accountable. We want all social media users to be responsible,” he said.
