The government has been praised for abolishing ranking of students and schools on national exam performance. Nyanza Region Parents Association chairman Jackson Omollo said the abolishment was long overdue as ranking has continued to erode education system in the country. Omollo said sanity will now prevail in the education system if the abolishment is upheld. “Our education system was being eroded at an alarming rate due to this ranking system and I want to thank the government for abolishing it,” he said. He added that ranking promoted commercialisation of the education system since some teachers opted for an examination-based type of education that produces half-baked students. Speaking to the Press in Kisumu, Omollo said students will now be able to learn to excel in examinations and not to be ranked the best in the country. “Our children will study for their future and not just to be seen in the national televisions and read on newspapers that they are leading in the national examinations,” he observed. He appealed to the government to ensure the new policy is implemented noting that there are good policies developed by the ministry of education but the implementation has been wanting. “The country has good education policies that if implemented will take our education system to greater heights. Let this new good policy be implemented for the betterment of our education,” he said. Omollo said there is a revolution in the education system in the country that if well nurtured will improve the education standards.
