Itumbi said bloggers and other social media users misuse the platforms by posting hate messages, insulting their rivals because there are no proper laws set to control the vice. He further stated that the social media platforms are currently operating on self-regulation with no laws on guard.

Itumbi lamented the lack of proper legislation on hate messages on social sites terming it as a motivation for hate mongers since they know nothing will be done against them.

Itumbi spoke at Kiangima Girls Secondary school during a prize-giving day.

He further revealed that consultations with the police and the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) were in top gear to curb the spread of hate messages ahead of the General Election.

To distance himself from controversy, Itumbi stated that the legislation was not meant to silence opposition's bloggers but to safeguard uprightness and protect Kenyans from unfair criticism.
