Kisumu County Commissioner Eratus Ekidor on Monday announced a raft of security measures to deter terrorism within the lakeside city. Ekidor directed hoteliers to ensure all visitors in their hotels are subjected to thorough scrutiny. He said security remains a top priority of the government and called for a concerted efforts from all Kenyans to defeat terrorists. He also told private guards to work closely with the government security agencies to be able to deal with criminals. “Private guards should be trained on how to screen people entering supermarkets and banks. What they are currently doing is cosmetic and not helping at all,” he said. Speaking on Monday during Madaraka Day celebrations at Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu, Ekidor said a team of police officers will be unveiled tomorrow to beef up security within slum areas. He said the officers will be patrolling crime prone areas at night and during the day. Ekidor said the team will be on motorcycles and vehicles to penetrate all corners within Kisumu city. He called upon the locals to cooperate with the team and volunteer information. Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma lauded the county security agencies for maintaining law and order. Ranguma said security has not been devolved but his government will work closely with the national government to address insecurity issues as a way of attracting investors.
