The national government has provided scholarships to 1,177 persons living with disabilities in the country.
The national chairman of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities David Ole Sankok, in a speech read on his behalf by Nakuru Education CeC Francis Mathea, said that this was meant to empower persons living with disability to further their education
Sankok pointed out that they were also keen in providing higher education to disabled persons during this years' celebrations to mark the UN Day of People Living with Disabilities at Nyayo Gardens on Thursday.
“We want to have equal opportunities for persons living with disabilities, especially in terms of employment opportunities,” he added.
In addition, the government had embarked on plans to ensure that all the disabled people are registered so that they can benefit from all government projects.
“We have also provided assistive devices to 2,736 persons with disability to enhance their mobility and dependence. Further, we are also providing cash transfer benefits to 27,000 households caring for the severely disabled across the county and we are targeting a further 20,000 before the end of the year,” he added.
Martin Njoroge, a volunteer who teaches sign language called on more Kenyans to learn different skills on how to communicate with the disabled.
“This is especially important to police officers and civil servants who want to ensure that the rights of the disabled are upheld,” he added.
