Amid widespread concerns on the drought situation in Garissa County, Devolution and National Planning CS Mwangi Kiunjuri has assured that the government is doing all it can to avert the looming food crisis.
The CS said that the national government has been distributing relief food to around fifteen hunger-stricken counties in the last three months, also adding that the school feeding programmes have been extended in all the arid and semi-arid counties.
Kiunjuri hinted that for several months now, the government has concentrated its food supplies with intention to reach to the drier counties of Garissa, Kwale, Mandera, Wair and Kilifi. Other counties that are set to receive the food donations include Samburu, Laikipia, Turkana, Isiolo among others.
He also maintained that the government has enough maize stocks in its strategic reserves, disclosing his Ministry will not need to import any to meet the country's demands. He credited this food security to irrigation efforts, saying that the increased production would widely help those in drought stricken regions.
