Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has dispelled claims that there is maize shortage in the country.
This is after Tegemeo Institute of Agriculture expressed concerns that there was no enough maize to sustain the country.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday with a local outlet, the CS disclosed that there was enough maize following an impressive harvest from the Galana-Kalalu irrigation project.
“Even though we have not hit the target of 40 bags per acre, we are happy to announce that last season, we managed 38 bags per acre and this is the best harvest since the project started,” said Wamalwa.
Wamalwa, however, did not reveal how many bags they harvested in total.
“We have enough food and we will be releasing thousands of bags to those affected by famine,” he said.
Over 2,000 acres at the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project has already been planted despite budgetary allocation hitches pitting the National Treasury and the National Irrigation Board (NIB).
