The government has reinstated the security detail of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi.
The duo's bodyguards were reinstalled on Tuesday following re-organisation at the police headquarters.
The withdrawal of their security officers originated from a memo sent from the police headquarters directing officers and vehicles to desist from escorting and clearing roads for county government officers.
Senior Assistant Inspector-General of Police King’ori Mwangi warned officers providing escort and chase cars to the officials of disciplinary action.
This comes after concerns were raised over the two governors having more than 15 officers attached to them.
Members of the Opposition had condemned the move terming it as politically motivated, adding that it may be linked to Joho's criticism of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu rubished the claims, saying “The withdrawal of the governor's security is not political in any way. It is an exercise where the regional commanders are reorganising themselves and it has no political motives. The commanders can do what they deem good.”
It is however unclear whether the governors will be allowed to use chase cars.
