The government has reinstated Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s security detail as he commences his second term in office.
Confirming the new development, Mombasa OCPD Lucas Ogara said Joho, just like any other governor, is entitled to police protection.Ogara said the Governor’s security team will be scaled up to include General Service Unit (GSU), regular and Administration police officers. “Joho is entitled to them. Elected leaders enjoy police protection based on provision,” said Ogara on Wednesday, as quoted by the Star. The OCPD also said that Joho will now enjoy police protection at his residence as well as his office. This comes after Joho was on Tuesday sworn into office during a ceremony held at Mama Ngina Drive. In January, the State withdrew bodyguards belonging to Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, a move that caused uproar among opposition leaders who accused the Jubilee administration of frustrating the two due to their constant criticism of President Uhuru Kenyatta. The bodyguards were later reinstated but Joho rejected them claiming they had been sent to spy on him on behalf of the government.
