After a long waiting period, the Government of Kenya has released approximately Sh8.7 million for free primary and free day secondary education.
This comes after estimates were tabled in the National Assembly and Treasury Ministry on Wednesday as they await approval from Members of Parliament.
According to reports the budget for free secondary education, which has been on one of the main plans of the Jubilee administration, is set to be issued in January.
Education PS Belio Kipsang confirmed these reports and said 11 million students are set to benefit from the funds.
Free secondary education is among the list of priorities allocated large supplementary budget estimates alongside the upcoming presidential election and national security.
The October 26 presidential election has forced the Ministry of Education to adjust the school term dates since many schools had been listed as polling stations.
Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i confirmed that the adjustments to the third term dates were made so that the country could carry out the fresh polls.
