Kibera primary and secondary schools are in for a big humiliation ahead of next week's official opening dates for the second term.
This has emerged after the Ministry of Education made an announcement that it had revoked all authority letters from various individuals and humanitarian organisations that it had permitted to visit schools and discharge voluntary services across the country.
In a circular dated April 25, the Ministry of Education directed all education stakeholders in counties, county quality control and assurance and standards officers, county directors of education and all principals of schools to take note of the statement and implement it to the latter.
The revocation of the letters follows reports that individuals and the various humanitarian organisations that had been given the go-ahead to visit public schools were charging parents and the school heads for the services yet they had applied as volunteers. This, the ministry noted, was an unnecessary burden to Kenyan parents and school managers.
The individual groups and organisations that are affected by the decision have been asked to re-apply for the authority letters afresh, directing their submissions to the principal secretary, Ministry of Education, State Department of Education for re-vetting.
Given the number of Non-governmental organisations operating in Kibera slums, it is no doubt that the students, parents, and teachers will in a way be inconvenienced.
