The government, through its Miinistry of Agriculture has moved in to clear allegations of an impending outbreak of rinderpest disease in livestock keeping areas, saying the animal disease was successfully eradicated all over the world in the year 2011.
The statement was in response to reports that appeared on a section of the local media outlets that had alluded to an outbreak of rinderpest disease in livestock keeping counties.
In press release, the government allayed all fears of re-emergence of the disease and even any other threat as far as livestock health is concerned.
Agriculture CS Willy Bett clarified that the alleged livestock disease had earlier on been eradicated in 2009 and an official certificate issued to that effect by the oversight World Organization for Animal Health in 2011.
The CS further confirmed that Kenya has a both active and passive surveillance programme that ensures there is no case of re-emergence of rinderpest in the country, while maintaining a high level of alertness.
According to CS Bett, the state surveillance program also ensures that all other important trans-boundary animal disorders are controlled to safeguard the country's livestock herds and regional trade.
