Garissa county commissioner James Kianda has said that the national government in collaboration with the county administration and other aid agencies has scaled up water trucking in the sub-counties that are worst hit by drought.

Mr Kianda said that hundreds of families are in need of water and relief food following a prolonged drought that has hit the county.

He said that both the national and county government have put in place measures that will ensure that the suffering brought about by the current situation is minimized.

“The military have joined in the water trucking by allocating trucks to provide water in Masalani, Modogashe and Fafi to ensure that those still in dire need of water are reached,” Mr Kianda said.

The county commissioner further said that distribution of relief food is also ongoing alongside vaccination of livestock all meant to mitigate on the effects of the biting drought.

The government is undertaking water trucking and other interventions despite some areas in Garissa receiving rains.

A government agency says it will take at least two weeks for the rain’s overall effect to be felt by the pastoralists who have suffered from the biting drought that has ravaged the area for the past one year.
