Garissa County is set to benefit from a Sh13.6 billion solar plant, after the national government secured a loan from the Exim Bank from China for the establishment of a 50 megawatts solar park.
The Solar project is expected to reduce power costs and also ease its supply to North Eastern region which is greatly under served by the national grid.
In a statement, the REA stated that the plant will be fed to the larger national grid system to increase supply capacity for easy distribution, and that the project will be undertaken and managed by the Rural Electrification Authority (REA).
“The electricity generated from the Garissa solar plant will be fed to the national grid, thus increasing electricity supply capacity in the country as indicated in the 5,000MW program,” read the statement in part.
It is expected that the power from the plant will greatly reduce Garissa’s over-reliance on expensive thermal electricity that it now depends on.
