The government has hinted on plans to having Facebook and Twitter use regulated in the country.

According to State House director of digital communication Dennis Itumbi, bloggers and users allied to certain political camps are misusing the platforms to spread animosity among Kenyans, hence the government's decision to propose a Bill seeking to curb such vices is timely.

"Social media, including but not limited to Facebook and twitter platforms, are presently operating on self regulation with no proper laws to guard against use or misuse of the channels. Some irresponsible individuals abuse others or even declare some people they hate as being dead since they feel no legal action will be taken against them,' noted Itumbi on Saturday.

He further said consultations with the police and the Kenya Film Classification Board is underway and is meant to curb the spread of tribal or hate messages ahead of the general election.

Itumbi also intimated that the legislation is never targeted at the opposition or its bloggers but is geared towards safeguarding the public against unjustified criticism and emotional torture.
