The Government of Kenya has announced plans to construct one million homes over the next five years. The move is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's manifesto to provide Kenyans with affordable housing.
According to reports, public private partnerships (PPPS) will be responsible for 800,000 housing units while the remainng to 200,000 will go towards social housing.
“The implementation of the programme calls for involvement of all stakeholders and will encompass coming up with innovative delivery models,” Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Arch. Aidah Munano said Tuesday.
Munano spoke during the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) Awards of Excellence in Architecture 2017 which took place at Vila Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi.
The project represents just one of four sectors the government is planning to focus on with others including improving manufacturing to at least 15 per cent of GDP, provision of 100 per cent universal healthcare coverage under the NHIF scheme and complete food and nutrition security.
Several members from the construction industry including architechs, engineers, construction project manager and town planners were all in attendance during the forum.
