The Ministry of Education has announced plans by the government to recruit a total of 10,000 more teachers.
Speaking on Wednesday, Education CS Fred Matiang'i noted that the move is in anticipation of an increased number of students when the government rolls out the free secondary education programme beginning next year January.
Matiang'i said the plan is in an advanced stage, with the ministry working closely with the Teachers Service Commission to ensure its success.
He revealed the plan when he appeared before a special committee of the National Assembly that is scrutinising the budget chaired by Kipkelion East Joseph Limo.
He further confirmed that plans were underway by the government to start giving out sanitary towels to school girls.
The move is aimed at ensuring a 100 per cent class attendance by female students.
The programme is set to be rolled out through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, under the administration of women representatives.
