The government has set aside Sh230 million to purchase livestock in counties affected by drought.
The first beneficiaries of the move by the government will be Marsabit, Wajir and Mandera counties.
According to Agriculture CS Willy Bett, these three counties are the worst hit by drought, and the government will buy the livestock and slaughter them in the same counties for consumption by the locals.
"We will buy livestock from you and slaughter them here," said the CS in Wajir town.
Bett is on an assessment tour concerning drought in the region, and was accompanied by fellow cabinet secretaries Mwangi Kiunjuri and Eugene Wamalwa.
The cabinet secretaries distributed 30 cartons of cooking oil, 500 bags of rice, 110 bags of beans to the residents of Wajir who are grappling with hunger.
