The national government has unveiled plans to upgrade security at the Likoni Crossing Channel.
Speaking during the re-launch of MV Harambee, Transport PS Irungu Nyakera said the government plans to spend Sh500 million in enhancing security at the channel.
Nyakera said Sh100 million will be disbursed within this financial year while the remaining Sh400 million will be allocated in the next financial year.
The government's move is meant to not only curb increased cases of crime, but also promote domestic and local tourism.
“We believe security at the channel is critical, because if something happens, God forbid, we will not have a channel to talk about. We have, therefore, budgeted for an additional Sh400 million for security,” Nyakera said, as quoted by the Star.
The PS further said that the government has intentions of constructing a multi-level parking for users of the channel.
Security measures that have already been undertaken at the channel include the installation of security scanners as well as deployment of private guards and police officers to man the area.
The Likoni channel is said to be used by approximately 300,000 commuters and 6,000 motorists on a daily basis.
