Mombasa County has for a long time been plagued with the drug smuggling menace.
Drug kingpins have continued to carry out their business even after the government gave stern warnings against the vice.
Youth in Mombasa have lost their lives, contracted HIV/AIDS and other health problems because of drugs.
They have also become unreliable in the job market and have turned to crime to sustain their drug addiction.
On Friday, the government through its security agencies nabbed cocaine at the Mombasa Port, which had been shipped from Venezuela, on transit to Uganda. The cocaine was estimated to have a street value of Sh360 million.
This is a commendable move by the government. The drug menace in Mombasa County and other neighbouring coastal counties is alarming, and nabbing that quantity of narcotics is a good measure by the government.
However, the government needs to step up its effort in the fight against drugs in Mombasa.
It should coin very strong measures and guidelines that will ensure that the drug dealers and peddlers are nabbed.
The society should also be sensitised on the dangers of engaging in drug abuse.
The menace should be completely wiped out as the youth need to be saved from their drug addiction hellhole.
Mombasa County officials should work hand in hand with security authorities in the area to detect and thwart any drug operations in the area, by employing efficient and effective measures.
No stones should be left unturned in the fight against drugs in the area.
