Over 200,000 residents of Uasin Gishu county are set to benefit from various water projects being funded by the national government.

Water and Irrigation Principal Secretary Prof. Fred Segor says the projects are meant to improve accessibility of water among locals across the county.

Addressing the press at Ziwa, Soy constituency on Tuesday when he launched a borehole drilling project, Segor said the government intents to drill at least 20 boreholes in the county.

"We've already done over half of those boreholes some of which are being equipped while others are still being drilled," said Prof. Segor.

He further revealed that there is an ongoing Elegarini water project that will be producing about 9,000 cubic metres of water per day.

Plans are also underway for the construction of Kipkaren water dam that will help increase water volumes in Eldoret town.

"The project will be complete by the end of this year and will serve over 100,000 extra people in Eldoret town mainly around Kapsoya area and the upper part of Kaptagat," noted the PS.

"We want to increase water production to at least 90 percent of the demand so that we only have 10 per cent deficit," he added.

Water consumption in Eldoret town and its environs is estimated to be 70,000 cubic metres per day but the available water is only 35,000 cubic metres.
