The government of Kenya has reported that traders have imported 1.1 million bags of maize before the end of the four month maize import subsidy plan.
As a result Kenyans will have access to Sh90 maize flour beyond the initially stated October deadline.
On Wednesday the Ministry of Agriculture announced that three ships carrying the final batch of subsidized maize have docked at the Port of Mombasa and that maize flour will be available at shops starting the second week of November.
“Three ships carrying the last batch of maize under the subsidy programme have docked in Mombasa and the process of discharging the cargo has just started,” said the Agriculture ministry,
The Treasury ended the subsidy in mid-October and had expected there to be a steady flow of flour at a cheap price by the end of the month.
