The government is ready to step up fish production in Githuguri Constituency through construction of several fish ponds, a senior agriculture expert has said.
Sam Wambugu, the District Agricultural Officer says that the county government will set aside some money in the next financial year to increase the production of fish in the area.
“We have urged the county government to increase its allocation to the fishery sub-sector in the coming financial year. The residents should also embrace fish farming as the county government will give them financial and technical support,” said Wambugu.
Speaking on Friday at Githiga Trading Center during launch of the Githiga Fish Pond, Wambugu said the county government will assist farmers financially to construct fish ponds and also follow up to make the whole process a success.
He added that the county government will construct two cooling plants and a processing factory in Githiga to boost farmers’ income.
Speaking to this writer, Peter Mwangi, the chairman said: “This time round, the county government has shown keen interest in fish farming. It is our hope that we will reciprocate through rearing of fish to supplement our incomes.”
He urged local residents to pool their resources together to fulfil their dreams.
“Apart from the county government’s support, members will be required to chip in. We cannot wait for the government to wholly finance the project,” he added.
