The government has set aside Sh400 million for the National Museum Kenya to construct a new collection centre in the country.

The money has been set aside in this financial year 2017.

NMK Director General Dr Mzalendo Kibunja said in the new collection centre, cultural materials will be collected, stored, preserved and made available to the public.

He said they will be soon be announcing the contract for the building of the centre that will be at the National Museums headquarters in Nairobi.

Kibunjia was speaking during the opening of the Abasuba Pictorial History Exhibition at the Kisumu Museum on Thursday, a research program that was supported by Goethe Institute at a tune of Sh4 million.

“This exhibition depicts the mandate of the national government which is to collect, inform, preserve and disseminate to the public to appreciate the culture and will have more exhibitions to different parts of the county,” he said.

Goethe is the Cultural Institute of Germany that has created intercultural exchange between the host country and Germany.

“In Africa we are in 12 countries and we are partnering with all these countries to preserve the local, national and ethnic cultures through various activities that are organized and funded by Goethe,” said the Director Nina Wichmann.

County Executive Committee member for Education and ICT Homa Bay county Naphtali Mattah said that they will support the initiative fully.
