[President Uhuru Kenyatta when he toured Isiolo on Friday during his campaign. He promised to distribute food freely during Ramadhan.] (zipo.co.ke)The government will distribute food ‘freely’ to Muslims during the holy Month of Ramadhan, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.
Uhuru said government will strive to ensure Kenyans get adequate food on their tables, adding that the current food crisis in the country is temporary and will be sorted out at the onset of the first maize harvest in July.
“To my Muslim brothers, I respect you and I want to assure you that my government will provide enough food for you during Ramadhan,” he said while on a campaign trail in Isiolo on Saturday.
He used the occasion to criticize opposition leaders who he said were capitalizing on the high maize flour prices to gain political mileage.
“There are people who have perfected the art of politicizing everything,” he said. “Ignore them because they have no good agenda for this country. Support the government and you will not regret.”
The opposition led by NASA leader Raila Odinga has constantly critiqued government over its laxity to protect Kenyans from the high cost of food especially maize flour consumed by majority Kenyans.
“Cartels are in government. They will do everything to cause a shortage in the market so that they milk every coin from your pockets. Don’t expect things to change,” Raila said when he campaigned in Kisii.
