The subsidy which started in May this year was to counter the skyrocketing of the price of Unga following the acute shortage of maize. The government last week announced the new buying price of sh 3200 per a bag of maize from farmers.According to millers , the Sh3200 per bag will push the current cost of flour above the prevailing price, adding more pressure to ugali lovers.Consumers will now buy a two -kilo pack of maize flour at sh120.
The millers added that the maize will get to Nairobi at sh 3,400 due to transport charges in ferrying the consignment from the North Rift. However, the situation might worsen should the government give in to pressure from farmers who want the price to be more than what the State offered.
