The Government is planning to eradicate street families.

Through the State Department of Special Programmes under Street Families’ Rehabilitation Trust Fund (SFRTF), the government will conduct a national census of street families in a step to obtain actual street population to be used in planning on how to remove them off the streets.

The government will liaise with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and UNICEF from next year to conduct the countrywide census to obtain segregated data to help conduct rescue rehabilitation and subsequent reintegration of thefamilies.

Speaking during a 10-Kilometer drug abuse awareness walk in Syokimau, Street Families’ Rehabilitation Trust Fund Director Robert Njogu said the government has already reformed at least 18,000 street children and that an investment of Sh6 million has been made to effect this.

“We are coming up with a policy to help us attain our vision of having a country free of

street families. We intent to roll out Chapters across the country which will take the shape of the former Provinces, which will cascade to Counties to address street families’ issues at that level,” Njogu said as reported by Citizen.

The Syokimau event brought together 32 ex–street boys who are currently on rehabilitation at New Mwangaza Rehabilitation Center at Katani.
