The government will import 10 million bags of maize from the regional market to offset the current domestic shortage, a Cabinet Secretary has said.
The 10 million bags will be distributed to famine-hit counties as government moves to cushion Kenyans from the effects of the drought that hit some parts of the country.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri said no Kenyan will go hungry in the counties adversely affected by the drought.
The counties include Kajiado, Tana River, Kilifi, Garissa, Narok and Turkana.
"We are in the process of importing 10 million bags of maize from Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia to top up on the 37 million bags currently being distributed," the CS said.
On Thursday, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa said the national government would work closely with county governments in ensuring the agriculture sector is fully supported to produce food that is sufficient to cushion the over 45 million Kenyans from hunger.
Kenyans is some parts of the country have been grappling with an acute shortage of maize, the country's staple due to a prolonged drought.
The most affected parts include North Eastern, Coast and North Rift region covering Turkana and some parts of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet.
