The government will lift a ban on night fishing in Lamu.

The ban was slapped following complaints that fishermen in the county engaged in indiscriminate fishing.

The fisheries Department reported on Tuesday that residents accused of fishing indiscriminately had agreed to follow the department’s guidelines on fishing.

The department’s Maurice Obege said if the department establishes that the fishermen have returned to harvesting fish indiscriminately, the ban will be slapped again.

The ban’s implementation began in 2011.

“We are glad that the fishermen have complied with our regulations,” Obege said.

“We will be working with the county government to ensure there is order.”

The Coastline cutting through Lamu is reach in fish especially the salty sardines which are a common delicacy in eateries in the County.

The fish breed is also exported to Europe and therefore supports the economy of Lamu County.
