Garissa Governor Ali Korane said the measures put in place are to ensure that the suffering brought about by the current situation is minimized adding that livestock in the county have undergone a lot of strain due to lack of water and pasture.

Mr Korane was speaking on Saturday in Garissa town when he flagged off 8,000 bags of livestock feeds drought pellets and water trucking.

“The programme targets to reach the most affected members of the pastoral community. My administration will work with the national government and development partners to address the drought situation in the county,” he said.

The livestock programme has been funded by the European Union, through the National Drought Management Authority.

Areas such as Balambala, Lagdera, Ijara and parts of Dadaab and Fafi subcounties are the worst-hit.

The governor further said that the county government will truck water to worst affected areas as hundreds of families are in need of water and relief food.

Governor Korane assured residents the county government will scale-up drought mitigation efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people and their livestock.

Garissa County has experienced three consecutive poor rainy seasons in which it received below normal rainfall.
